FEWER THAN 320 LEFT. SAVE OUR MEXICAN GRAY WOLVES BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

usfws-mexican-wolf-snow-large.jpg

Just days after H.R. 4255 advanced, a bill that would strip Mexican gray wolves of their federal Endangered Species Act protections, the wolf community lost Taylor, one of the most followed Mexican gray wolves on the landscape. He was struck and killed on a highway in New Mexico.

Taylor wasn’t just surviving, he was challenging arbitrary boundaries that humans imposed onto him. He knew in his heart that he belonged in Mount Taylor, returning again and again here, even after being captured and relocated twice.

To scientists and advocates, he represented exactly what recovery is meant to look like: wolves moving freely, exploring, and rebuilding their presence on the landscape.

But the world Taylor navigated is still full of danger: highways, human-made borders, and policies that ignore how wolves actually live. His death is a painful reminder that even the strongest wolves are not safe.

And there are so few left.

These invisible lines haven't stopped others from trying. Ella was another Mexican gray wolf who followed her heart toward Mount Taylor only to be found dead. Her story joins those of Mystery and Hope, wolves who became symbols of the "lobo's" relentless drive to reclaim ancestral lands north of Interstate 40.

But even Hope was eventually found dead, a tragic end to a journey that was meant to lead toward a new beginning. Together, these wolves represent a biological reality: they do not recognize human-drawn maps, and their repeated losses show that they cannot survive in these territories without our active protection.

The Mexican gray wolf is one of the rarest mammals in North America, with only about 319 individuals remaining in the wild in the United States. Every single wolf matters. Every loss is significant.

Now, H.R. 4255 threatens to unravel the fragile progress that has kept them from extinction. If passed, it would remove federal protections, stop critical recovery efforts like releasing genetically important releases from captive programs, and leave them vulnerable to being killed without oversight. The systems that help wolves and humans coexist would disappear.

We are facing a decision that could determine whether this species survives at all.

This is what’s at stake: not just one wolf, but an entire future.

🔴 Urge your Representative to OPPOSE H.R. 4255.

For Taylor. For the few that remain. Before it’s too late.

If you live in the United States, the House of Representatives need to hear from you right now.

1. Find your legislator’s phone and email here.

2. Send an email to your Representative. Here is a sample email.

Headline: Oppose H.R. 4255: Protect the Mexican Gray Wolf

Dear Representative [Last Name],

As your constituent and a supporter of science-based wildlife management, I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose H.R.4255

Wolves are essential to the health and biodiversity of our native ecosystems. They act as a keystone species by:

  • Culling the old and sick in deer and elk populations, which keeps herds healthy and reduces the spread of disease.

  • Restoring the balance of local flora, which provides habitats for birds, fish, and other wildlife.

  • Supporting rural economies through ecotourism revenue.

Recent reports indicate that population counts remain dangerously low with fewer than 320 remaining in the wild  in the United States. Our ecosystems need our wolves. Without them, ecosystems fall apart like what we saw in Yellowstone. Please help our wildlife and ensure these animals remain protected.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

[Your City, State, and Zip Code]

3. Call your Representative. It is quick and easy. Here is an example of what you can say. "Hi, my name is [Name] from [City], and I’m calling to ask the Representative to oppose H.R. 4255. This bill would weaken the Endangered Species Act and make it easier to kill Mexican gray wolves, who are still critically endangered. I’m asking the Representative to vote no on H.R. 4255 and choose science-based recovery. Thanks for making sure my voice is heard.”
